Favorite Day Strawberry Whipped Topping Review

Whipped Topping in an aerosol can

My wife brought home this strawberry whipped topping from Target a few days ago. For people unaware, Favorite Day is a brand of Target stores so you’ll have to go there to pick it up.

Additionally, the strawberry whipped cream is a seasonal offering. Based on the bunny featured on the label, “seasonal” seems to mean it is available around the Easter holiday including a bit after as stores exhaust inventory.

So, is it any good? Read on!

The Review

I wasn’t expecting great flavor from this whipped topping before I tried it. I say this because if you examine the ingredients you’ll find artificial flavor being used to mimic the taste of real strawberries.

However, after I tasted it, I was slightly shocked at how much it tasted like real strawberries. We’re are talking about a taste somewhat similar to fresh cut strawberries with a bit of sweetness. It’s nothing like the clearly fake strawberry flavor that you find in something like a strawberry candy that tastes good but nothing like the real deal.

Overall, there is a nice balance between the strawberry flavor and creaminess from the real cream used in it. The sweetness level is also spot on but may be somewhat on the sweet side for some people.

As you can see from the image above, this whipped topping has a pleasant pink color to it . It’s colored from vegetable juice which you don’t notice when you taste it. I’m just happy they didn’t use an artificial dye like Red #40.

The one ingredient I don’t like in this whipped topping is carrageenan. It’s used in foods as an thickener and is derived from red seaweed. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), deems this additive “Generally Recognized as Safe” it is not without controversy.

For example, Healthline lists that it can potentially cause inflammation, bloating, IBS, glucose intolerance, colon cancer, and food allergies based on limited studies. Of course, more human based studies are needed to associate a link to any possible listed side effects.

The texture of this whipped topping is a bit on the thinner side. However, I sprayed it on some banana bread and let it sit a room temperature for around 20 minutes and it maintained its structure. relatively well. I wish that it was a bit thicker but this is not a major issue.

The Rating

I give Favorite Day Strawberry Whipped Topping 8.6 out of 10 stars. This is one of those products that I wish was made all year. It has excellent flavor with a surprisingly sweetened real strawberry taste. I took points off for its thinner texture and use of carrageenan which I prefer to avoid.

I paid around $3.60 for the 13 oz. can of it you see pictured throughout this article. It’s a pretty good value at that price point. I probably would pay up to $3.75 to $4.00 per can for it on occasion.
