Hudsonville Super Scoop Ice Cream Review

I grew up in Michigan where Superman ice cream was reportedly invented. It was a popular flavor when I was a kid and still remains a favorite at many ice cream shops around the Midwest.

It’s called by different names depending on who makes it such as Scooperman, Super Hero, and Super Scoop with some flavor variations based on brand.

The Hudsonville’s Super Scoop features three flavors and colors. Blue is blue moon, red is black cherry, and yellow is vanilla.

It’s almost impossible to describe the overall flavor of this ice cream when all flavors are consumed at once. Therefore, let me briefly explain the taste of each individual flavor.

The yellow vanilla is super creamy with a sort of sweet vanilla flavor. Its a nice addition that balances the other flavors.

The black cherry flavor has a similar creaminess as the vanilla but with a mild cherry flavor. You only start to taste cherry as an end note before you swallow to give you an idea of how much cherry flavor you’ll taste. It’s nothing like your typical black cherry ice cream with the bits of cherries in it with a pronounced cherry flavor.

The blue moon is the real star of this ice cream. However, its really difficult to describe its flavor. You know what I’m talking about if you’ve tried it on its own. If I had to describe it, I’d say it has flavors of citrus and raspberry with notes of almond. It’s certainly a unique but tasty flavor that you almost need to try to begin to understand.

You traditional eat these flavors combined which produces an overall flavor that is near impossible to describe. There is just too much going on in it with the uniqueness of blue moon helping to confuse the taste buds the most.

However, that doesn’t mean that this ice cream isn’t delicious. In fact its one of the best Superman-style ice creams that I have ever had. Despite it’s artificial flavors and colors, this ice cream tastes fresh, real, and creamy. It’s texture is smooth and provides a nice mouthfeel as the ice cream melts in the mouth.

Rating

I give Hudsonville Super Scoop ice cream 9.4 stars out of 10. Yes, this is an ice cream geared toward kids but that doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy it on occasion as a nostalgic treat. The ice cream lets the blue moon flavor shine with the more subtle flavors of black cherry and vanilla doing a beautiful job of complimenting it.

The ice cream itself is high-quality with milk, cream and sugar being the most predominate ingredients used to make it. However, I had to take a few points off for the use of artificial flavors and colors.

Yes, the artificial colors are likely needed to produce the vibrant colors this ice cream is known for but that doesn’t mean I have to like them being used. The use of these ingredients will likely make me buy this ice cream less frequently in the future but that’s just a personal preference.
